The Government Wants to Strengthen Dementia Care

Dementia diseases are a growing public health challenge. In Sweden, approximately 150,000 people live with dementia, and the number is expected to increase as the population ages. The government has therefore presented a plan to strengthen efforts against dementia diseases, including in the budget bill.
The initiative builds upon the national dementia strategy and includes earlier diagnosis, strengthened primary care, better support for relatives, and an increased focus on preventative work.
Earlier diagnosis
A prioritized issue is that more people should receive a dementia investigation at an early stage. Early diagnosis makes it possible to plan care and support, as well as to initiate treatment at a stage where the effect can be greatest.
Strengthened primary care
Primary care plays a central role in dementia care. The government therefore wants to improve the possibilities for health centers to conduct dementia investigations and follow up with patients. The initiative also includes better cooperation between regional healthcare and municipal social care.
Support for relatives
Dementia diseases also greatly affect family and loved ones. The government therefore wants to strengthen support for relatives through, for example, respite care at home, counseling, and better access to day activities.
Preventative work
Research has shown that several risk factors for dementia can be influenced through lifestyle and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. This includes physical activity, diet, blood pressure control, and cognitive stimulation. Preventative measures are therefore part of the government's plan.
