Jag och min Alzheimer

Jag har fått en Alzheimers diagnos (Kod F002/F018). Här publicerar jag texter i ett försök att bygga en faktasamling om sjukdomen. Konkurrensen är tyvärr inte stor.

You don't have to have all the answers now. Here you can start reading about the diagnosis, everyday life and ways to find support – at your own pace.

Becoming diagnosed is an upheaval. You don't need to have all the answers now, and you don't need to take everything in at once. I received my own diagnosis in a less good way. My doctor at Närhälsan called and said more or less this: “You were right, you have Alzheimer's. I'll write a prescription.” That was all.

What feels most important to you right now?

Many questions can be raised after an Alzheimer's diagnosis. You don't have to take them in any particular order. Here are some areas that may be important to you. If you haven't been given a follow-up appointment, insist on getting one.

What happens now?

What are the first steps? Who do you contact in the healthcare system? What questions do you want to ask at your next visit? Write your questions down, so you don't have to remember everything.

Insist that the healthcare system lets you talk to a doctor. You are living with a fatal disease, so it is not an unreasonable request. The healthcare system's gruffness and reluctance probably stem from a feeling that they have nothing to offer, neither a brake nor a cure. But a doctor can still have sensible views, especially if you have prepared yourself with questions.

Feelings and reactions

There is no right or wrong way to react. You may feel worry, grief, anger or relief at getting an explanation. The feelings can also change from day to day.
