Jag och min Alzheimer

Jag har fått en Alzheimers diagnos (Kod F002/F018). Här publicerar jag texter i ett försök att bygga en faktasamling om sjukdomen. Konkurrensen är tyvärr inte stor.

Exposing the Shortcomings of Swedish Dementia Care

Exposing the Shortcomings of Swedish Dementia Care

Swedish dementia care often functions worse than it should. On freiki.org, dementia nurse Ann-Charlotte Frey analyzes why – and what can be done better.

On the website Freiki-Forum https://freiki.org, dementia nurse Ann-Charlotte Frey examines how Swedish dementia care works in reality. With both long professional experience and personal experiences from her father's illness, she describes a care system that often fails to live up to its own ambitions.

Medication Not the Main Focus

A central theme in her texts is that the most important part of dementia care – non-pharmacological care – often gets overshadowed. Research shows that environment, approach, daily structure, and knowledge of the disease are crucial for the well-being of people with dementia. Despite this, the quality varies greatly between different operations, and many patients do not receive the type of support that could improve their quality of life.

Her thesis may seem entirely obvious. There are no medications for Alzheimer's, and therefore, non-pharmacological measures are the significant ones.

Frey's analyses are particularly valuable because they shift the focus from merely diagnoses and medications to how people actually live with the disease. She shows how behavioral problems often arise in the encounter between the disease and an environment not adapted to cognitive impairment.

Concrete Proposals

At the same time, her work is not just criticism. The site also presents concrete ideas on how dementia care can be improved – through better training, clearer care programs, and a greater focus on the individual's life history and needs.
