Jag och min Alzheimer

Jag har fått en Alzheimers diagnos (Kod F002/F018). Här publicerar jag texter i ett försök att bygga en faktasamling om sjukdomen. Konkurrensen är tyvärr inte stor.

Research Overview: Final Results in the Near Future

This is not an easy-to-read article. The intention is to provide an overview of all important Alzheimer's-related research where results can be expected in the near future.

Updated May 23. This overview concerns research conducted within Phase 3 – which is the pharmaceutical development's final exam. Here, it is not enough to show that a drug affects biomarkers or laboratory values. Phase 3 must demonstrate that the treatment works in reality – not just in theory or in the laboratory.

For many years, Alzheimer's research looked like one big attempt to prove a single theory: that the disease is primarily driven by the accumulation of amyloid in the brain. But when looking at today's Phase 3 landscape, a more complex picture emerges. Amyloid still dominates, but metabolism, inflammation, the brain's energy systems, and combination strategies are gaining increasing prominence. The question is no longer just which drug wins – but which mechanisms, together, can provide the greatest benefit.

The latest major review of the development field describes an unusually active situation with 192 clinical studies.

Phase 3: Do people actually get better – or at least decline slower?

Many of the Alzheimer's field's most promising ideas have failed after a Phase 3 study. But this is also where the breakthroughs of recent years have come from.
