Kisunla Could Give Us More Time – Sweden's Decision is Drawing Closer

For those of us living with Alzheimer's, time is perhaps the most precious thing we have. A Swedish decision on Kisunla is now drawing closer – one of the first drugs that can actually slow the progression of the disease. Its competitor, Leqembi, has already been rejected. Can Kisunla succeed where Leqembi failed?

Sweden has already said no to Leqembi

Kisunla is not the first disease-modifying drug for Alzheimer's to be considered in Sweden. Its competitor, Leqembi (lecanemab), has already been evaluated by the NT Council, which recommended that the regions not use the drug. The cost versus the perceived benefit weighed heavily.

That decision shows how high the bar is set. It's not enough for a drug to work and be approved in Europe. It must also be deemed sufficiently cost-effective for the Swedish healthcare system.

This makes the decision on Kisunla particularly interesting.

Kisunla has a key difference

Kisunla and Leqembi are based on the same fundamental idea: antibodies that target amyloid in the brain. But there is an important practical and economic difference.

Treatment with Kisunla can be stopped once the amyloid plaques have been reduced to a specific level. This means that not all patients will need to continue with regular infusions year after year.

This could mean fewer treatment sessions, less burden on the patient and their loved ones, and lower costs for the healthcare system. This particular difference should weigh heavily as Kisunla is now being assessed.

Time is also a cost

Of course, the risks, effects, and costs must be weighed against each other. Kisunla is not a treatment for everyone and requires careful examination and follow-up.

But there is also something that is difficult to capture in a health economic calculation: the value of time.
